Dr Angelique Keturah Walker-Smith at the UN headquarters in New York City to field her impressions about the recent UN Summit of the Future, and how the ecumenical movement might contribute to achieving the goals outlined in the UN Pact for the Future.

El secretario general del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), el Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, acompañado por el Rev. El secretario general del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), el Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, acogió con satisfacción la aprobación del Pacto de las Naciones Unidas para el Futuro: “Este acuerdo histórico representa el compromiso colectivo de hacer frente a los desafíos más urgentes de nuestro tiempo: el cambio climático, la desigualdad, la paz y la justicia”, dijo. “Ofrece una vía para que la comunidad mundial trabaje hacia un futuro más justo y más sostenible”.

Le secrétaire général du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), le pasteur Jerry Pillay, a salué l’adoption du Pacte pour l’avenir des Nations Unies. «Cet accord historique incarne un attachement collectif à relever les défis les plus urgents de notre époque — les changements climatiques, les inégalités, la paix et la justice», a-t-il indiqué. «Il permet à la communauté mondiale d’œuvrer à un avenir plus juste et plus durable.»

The general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, accompanied by Rev. Dr Kenneth Mtata, WCC program director for Public Witness and Diakonia, the general secretary of the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK), Rev. Kim, Jong Seng and other leaders from the NCCK met with South Korean prime minister Han Duck-soo. 

WCC convenes Ecumenical Diakonia Reference Group to tackle global crises

From 30 September to 2 October, the World Council of Churches (WCC) will convene the inaugural meeting of the Ecumenical Diakonia Reference Group in Yerevan, Armenia. The meeting will provide WCC partners and member churches with a platform to explore new approaches to diaconal work, address urgent global challenges, and foster stronger partnerships.

WCC welcomes adoption of United Nations Pact for the Future

Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay welcomed the adoption of the United Nations Pact for the Future. This historic agreement embodies a collective commitment to tackle the most urgent challenges of our time—climate change, inequality, peace, and justice,” he said. It offers a pathway for the global community to work toward a more just and sustainable future.”

Faith communities urged to support Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

As part of the Summit of the Future Action Days on 21 September, the World Council of Churches (WCC) calls on churches, individuals, and organizations worldwide to endorse the Faith for Non-Proliferation Treaty. This initiative aims to catalyze the phase-out of fossil fuels while ensuring a just transition for workers, communities, and countries.

Consultation advocates for land as commons, not commodity

The World Council of Churches (WCC) co-organized a New International Financial and Economic Architecture Consultation on "Land as Commons, not Commodity" from 28-30 August 2024 in Limuru, Kenya. The event brought together nearly 60 theologians, faith actors, researchers, and land activists to explore faith-based responses to global land issues, emphasizing land's role as a commons, not a commodity.

WCC general secretary will visit Korea to pray and work with churches

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay will visit South Korea in September to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK) at a global conference on 20-22 September, then attend the assemblies of the Presbyterian Church of Korea Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea on 24-26 September.
