A young person’s reflections on what “health” really means

My work experience at the World Council of Churches (WCC) consisted of meeting with professionals whose work related to health. Before our meetings, I wanted to get a clear understanding of the term “health.” The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Los combustibles fósiles –carbón, petróleo y gas– son, con diferencia, los que contribuyen más significativamente a la emergencia climática mundial, ya que suponen más del 75 % de las emisiones mundiales de gases de efecto invernadero y casi el 90 % de todas las emisiones de dióxido de carbono (CO2). Por este motivo, detener nuevas inversiones en la expansión de los combustibles fósiles es una de las maneras más eficaces de agilizar las soluciones climáticas y salvar las vidas de los niños.

Die Klimakrise ist sie größte Gefahr für Kinderleben und für das Überleben künftiger Generationen. Fossile Brennstoffe – Kohle, Erdöl und Erdgas – tragen mit Abstand am meisten zur Klimakrise bei. Sie machen 75% der weltweiten Treibhausgasemissionen und beinahe 90 % aller Emissionen von Kohlendioxid (CO2) aus. Eine der wirkungsvollsten Möglichkeiten, Lösungen für die Klimakrise voranzutreiben und Kinderleben zu retten, ist daher, neue Investitionen in den Ausbau fossiler Brennstoffprojekte einzustellen.

L’urgence climatique fait planer la pire des menaces sur la vie des enfants et la survie des générations futures. Les énergies fossiles (le charbon, le pétrole et le gaz naturel) sont ce qui contribue le plus à l’urgence climatique sur notre planète, et de loin : elles représentent plus de 75 % des émissions de gaz à effet de serre dans le monde, et près de 90 % de toutes les émissions de dioxyde de carbone (CO2). Par conséquent, l’un des moyens les plus efficaces d’accélérer les solutions climatiques et, ainsi, de sauver la vie des enfants consiste à suspendre les nouveaux investissements dans l’expansion des énergies fossiles.

Le 3 juillet, lors d’un événement en ligne intitulé «Sauvez la vie des enfants: des services bancaires plus responsables pour le climat», il a été expliqué qu’investir dans de nouveaux projets d’expansion des combustibles fossiles menace le bien-être des enfants, des jeunes et des générations à venir. L’objectif était également d’encourager à agir pour demander des comptes à celles et ceux qui investissent dans les combustibles fossiles.

Interfaith Forum addresses human rights impact of climate-related losses and damages at UN event

The World Council of Churches (WCC), as part of the Geneva Interfaith Forum on Climate Change, Environment, and Human Rights, co-hosted a side event at the 56th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. The event, titled "A Human Rights and Ethical Perspective on Noneconomic Loss and Damage in the Context of Climate Change," emphasized how non-economic losses—such as the loss of life, health, cultural heritage, and flora and fauna—pose serious threats to the enjoyment of human rights and social wellbeing, and demand remedial action.
