WCC calls for debt justice and wealth taxation at the UN Social Forum

At the recent United Nations Social Forum, the World Council of Churches (WCC) led global calls for a renewed economic system that prioritizes human rights and environmental sustainability. Held from 31 October to 1 November at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the forum brought together representatives from governments, civil society, and academe to discuss the impact of finance on development and human rights. 

WCC, KAICIID explore areas of cooperation

A delegation from the KAICIID Dialogue Centre – based in Lisbon – visited the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 22 October to explore areas of common interest and possible cooperation, with a particular focus on issues in the European region.

United Church of Canada trailblazer Rev. Dr Lois Wilson dies, age 97

With great sadness, the United Church of Canada announced the death of Rev. Dr Lois M. Wilson, the denomination’s 28th  moderator, and the first woman to fill the role. She faithfully served as moderator from 1980 to 1982. Wilson died in hospital in Fredericton, NB, on 13 September. She was 97 years old.

Interfaith Forum addresses human rights impact of climate-related losses and damages at UN event

The World Council of Churches (WCC), as part of the Geneva Interfaith Forum on Climate Change, Environment, and Human Rights, co-hosted a side event at the 56th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. The event, titled "A Human Rights and Ethical Perspective on Noneconomic Loss and Damage in the Context of Climate Change," emphasized how non-economic losses—such as the loss of life, health, cultural heritage, and flora and fauna—pose serious threats to the enjoyment of human rights and social wellbeing, and demand remedial action.
