Faith leaders call for urgent economic transformation to combat inequality and climate crisis

Faith leaders warn that the global concentration of wealth and power has reached "unprecedented" and "alarming" levels, exacerbating inequality, undermining democracy, and accelerating climate catastrophe. The ecumenical call to action came in a joint communique issued today following a three-day meeting in Geneva of the Ecumenical Panel on a New International Financial and Economic Architecture (NIFEA).

The Ecumenical Panel on NIFEA will convene for its 6th meeting to address the growing global economic inequality, climate catastrophe, and explore alternative economic systems in this Jubilee year. This collaborative effort between the World Council of Churches, World Communion of Reformed Churches, Lutheran World Federation, World Methodist Council, and Council for World Mission brings together experts in economics, finance, sociology, and theology to chart a path toward a more just and sustainable economic architecture.

As economic inequality reaches alarming levels, faith leaders, economists, and justice advocates will gather for the 6th Meeting of the Ecumenical Panel on a New International Financial and Economic Architecture (NIFEA) from 25-27 March in Geneva. Organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) in collaboration with the World Communion of Reformed Churches, Lutheran World Federation, World Methodist Council, and Council for World Mission, the meeting will focus on urgent economic reforms for a more just and sustainable future.

Consultation advocates for land as commons, not commodity

The World Council of Churches (WCC) co-organized a New International Financial and Economic Architecture Consultation on "Land as Commons, not Commodity" from 28-30 August 2024 in Limuru, Kenya. The event brought together nearly 60 theologians, faith actors, researchers, and land activists to explore faith-based responses to global land issues, emphasizing land's role as a commons, not a commodity.

Linking with the theme of 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”, this hybrid session will bring a range of perspectives to bear on the questions: What can we do to address extreme wealth concentration? How can taxing the richest in our societies as well as addressing corporate tax evasion serve to advance the goal of gender equity? And why should faith-based organisations care?

Bossey research fellow reflects on economic and ecological justice

Max Weber, a student at the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, is currently completing a WCC research fellowship. He took time to reflect on his recent attendance at the World Social Forum 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal, as well as his studies related to economic and ecological justice.

The CSW is the largest United Nations gathering on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
