Church leaders ask for immediate ceasefire in Lebanon

An online meeting was convened on 4 October by the World Council of Churches (WCC) to express solidarity and support, and to provide a safe and constructive space for sharing, reflection, and discussion on the critical challenges currently facing Lebanon. The Middle East Council of Churches and ACT Alliance also participated in the virtual meeting.

Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, manifestó su profunda tristeza y extrema preocupación por la escalada de la violencia y los ataques en el Líbano. “Como seguidores de Cristo y custodios de la paz, reiteramos nuestro compromiso con la justicia y la protección de la dignidad humana y de las vidas humanas”, dijo. “Condenamos de manera inequívoca el uso de la violencia, particularmente en las zonas civiles, que ha causado inmensos sufrimientos, destrucción y la trágica pérdida de vidas”.

Der Generalsekretär des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK), Pastor Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, bekundete seine tiefe Betroffenheit und Sorge über die eskalierende Gewalt und die Angriffe auf Libanon. „Wir bekräftigen als Jüngerinnen und Jünger Christi und Friedensstifterinnen und -stifter unser Engagement für Gerechtigkeit und für den Schutz von menschlicher Würde und Menschenleben“, sagte er. „Wir verurteilen den Einsatz von Gewalt, besonders in zivilen Bereichen, aufs Schärfste. Diese Gewalt hatte unermessliches Leid, Zerstörung und den tragischen Verlust von Menschenleben zur Folge.“

Le secrétaire général du Conseil œcuménique des Églises, le pasteur Jerry Pillay, a fait part de sa grande tristesse et de ses vives inquiétudes face à la recrudescence de la violence et des attaques au Liban. «En tant que disciples du Christ et artisans de la paix, nous réaffirmons notre engagement en faveur de la justice et de la protection de la dignité et de la vie humaine», déclare-t-il. «Nous condamnons sans équivoque le recours à la violence, en particulier dans les zones civiles, qui provoque une immense souffrance, sème la destruction et cause la perte tragique de vies humaines».

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay expressed deep sadness and grave concern over the escalating violence and attacks on Lebanon. As followers of Christ and stewards of peace, we reaffirm our commitment to justice and the protection of human dignity and lives,” he said. We unequivocally condemn the use of violence, particularly in civilian areas, which has caused immense suffering, destruction, and the tragic loss of life.”

Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches of the Near East commemorates centennial

The Union of Armenian Evangelical Churches of the Near East (UAECNE) gathered for a celebratory service on 30 June at the First Armenian Evangelical Church of Beirut. The service, commemorating the centennial of the union, was attended by representatives of churches from different Middle Eastern and global churches, the ambassador of Armenia, Lebanese members of Parliament, representatives of Armenian political parties, pastors, and a large number of members of Armenian Evangelical congregations.

On his final day in a visit to Lebanon, World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay met with His Beatitude Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rai, Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, at the Patriarchal Edifice-Bkerke, in the presence of the Patriarchal Vicar General His Eminence Bishop Paul Sayah.
