WCC central committee convenes to prepare for 11th Assembly

The World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee will convene via video conference from 23-29 June to prepare for the 11th WCC Assembly, taking place in 2022 in Karlsruhe, Germany under the theme Christs love moves the world to reconciliation and unity.” The WCC governing body will also address business matters and strengthen the WCC fellowship through sharing and prayer. 

WCC executive committee will convene, call for unity in defeating COVID-19

The World Council of Churches (WCC) executive committee will convene from 17-20 May, and if needed on 25 May, with a focus on preparing for the upcoming WCC central committee meeting, planning for the WCC 11th Assembly in Germany in 2022, and issuing a public statement on overcoming global injustice and inequity to defeat COVID-19.

Not good enough

The synthesis report from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on the National Determined Contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement was released at the end of last February. This report sums up the NDCs reported to UNFCCC until 31 December 2020. It represents 40% of the parties and 30% of the global emissions.

The executive committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) will meet online 9-13 November to address plans and budget for 2021, review planning for the WCC 11th Assembly in Germany in 2022, and the ongoing implications of COVID-19 on the life and work of the fellowship. The leadership body will also discuss current world situations on which public statements may be needed.

WCC welcomes new staff

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has welcomed five new staff. WCC interim general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca warmly greeted them as they began to serve in their particular ministries.

“Who will pay the recovery?” – international report calls for tax justice under COVID-19

The global pandemic has led to major structural increases in public expenditures to support health, incomes and employment. The question of who will ultimately foot the bill will need to be answered. A report launched on 15 June by the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation alerts that the economic burden must not fall disproportionately on disadvantaged groups and countries.
