WCC Gender Justice Reference Group meets in Zimbabwe

The World Council of Churches (WCC) Gender Justice Reference Group met in Harare, Zimbabwe from 7-12 December, marking its first in-person gathering. At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the World Council of Churches (WCC) interviewed Archbishop Rev. Julio Murray Thompson of the Anglican Communion in Central America, moderator of the WCC Commission on Climate Justice and Sustainable Development. The conversation explored the WCC’s “Triple COPs” strategy, the commission’s ongoing work, and how faith communities can call for greater collaboration with governments and the private sector to ensure just and effective climate solutions.

WCC general secretary highlights how WCC proclaims God’s justice in the world

In a report to the World Council of Churches (WCC) executive committee, WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay reflected that, particularly during the past several months, his focus has been to lift the profile of the WCC. I believe that this is being achieved in major proportions,” he said. I am also grateful that many of the invitations that come my way are also graciously funded by the inviters and this certainly helps our budget constraints, especially when the requests for the general secretary’s presence are so numerous.”

A joint publication of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and ACT Alliance, this study document aims to clarify the understanding of ecumenical diakonia and to provide a common platform for acting and reflecting together for the churches and ecumenical partners worldwide. 

The major publication outlines the theological components of diakonia and offers practical content for those engaged in the service of diakonia. The study document is intended to be used for formation and training in ecumenical diakonia, to strengthen the institutional capacity of those involved in diakonia, and to foster dialogue and cooperation between churches, ecumenical partners, ACT Alliance and the WCC.

WCC diakonia group charts the path forward on eco-diakonia and decolonization

The Ecumenical Diakonia Reference Group, established by the World Council of Churches (WCC), held its inaugural meeting in Yerevan, Armenia, from 30 September to 2 October. The group, cochaired by Rev. Pauliina Parhiala (Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission) and Rebecca Teiko Sabah (Presbyterian Church of Ghana), focused on topics such as climate justice, decolonization, and diaconal collaboration.

On 16 October, during World Food Day, the World Council of Churches (WCC) will host an international webinar to address the worsening global food crisis. Featuring voices from the United Nations, civil society, academia, and faith communities, the event will examine the systemic causes of hunger and explore ways to empower women and children, the most vulnerable to food insecurity.

Towards a life-flourishing ministry

Over the past few days, I had the privilege of attending several significant events in Seoul, South Korea: the centennial anniversary of the National Council of Churches in Korea, the Ecumenical Forum for the Korean Peace Process, the general assemblies of the Presbyterian Church of Korea, and the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea, as well as the Ecumenical Conference on Life-Flourishing Community Ministries.

WCC strengthens collaboration with Felm

The Felm visited the World Council of Churches, strengthening collaboration and dialoguing about church cooperation, development, peace and reconciliation, and humanitarian aid. The Felm works with local Lutheran churches and non-governmental organizations in 24 countries around the world, aiming to promote human dignity and justice.

WCC event in Armenia explores transformative diakonia for global justice

The World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Diakonia Reference Group event began on 30 September in Yerevan, Armenia, focusing on transformative action to address some of the world’s most pressing issues. Opening the gathering, Rev. Dr Kenneth Mtata, WCC programme director for Public Witness and Diakonia, urged churches to tackle the systemic roots of global challenges, such as climate change, violent conflict, and inequality.
