The second reflection of the Seven Weeks for Water 2025 series of the WCC Ecumenical Water Network was written by the late Dr Agnes Abuom, former moderator of the WCC central committee. Dr Abuom was the first woman and first African to hold this important position. She was also the executive director of TAABCO Research and Development Consultants, Nairobi, Kenya. In her reflection, being an African woman around the International Women’s Day, she explores the linkages between poverty and water scarcity and their impact on women. In 2017, Kenya was reeling under a serious drought which was deteriorating the situation for women as they were mostly responsible for fetching water for their families.
The year 2025 will mark the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325, which inspired the modern ecumenical movement to work on issues on Faith and Order for the unity of the church and humankind. Additionally, 2025 will also mark the 100th anniversary of the first Universal Christian Conference on Life and Work, held in Stockholm in 1925.
The latest issue of The Ecumenical Review, the quarterly journal of the World Council of Churches (WCC) is titled “A Living Fellowship of Churches” and marks the 75th anniversary of the WCC, which was founded in 1948 at its 1st Assembly in Amsterdam.
A new book, "Ahead of Her Time: Pan-African Women of Faith and the Vision of Christian Unity, Mission, and Justice,” authored by World Council of Churches (WCC) president from North America Rev. Dr Angelique Walker-Smith, debuted on 1 November, All Saints Day, during an online and in-person reception and awards ceremony of pan-African women of faith represented in the book. The event took place at Bread for the World (USA) in Washington, DC.
A public online celebration and panel discussion on 31 August, “They too were Gathered: Paying homage to Black people’s contributions to 75 years of World Council of Churches (WCC),” uncovered the contributions of Black people from different parts of the world in the formation and growth of the WCC.
