From Rome's “Jubilee for Workers” to COP30 - churches champion just transition

At the "World of Work, Place of Hope" event held in Rome on 2 May, faith leaders, economists, and labour representatives gathered to address the intertwined challenges of climate justice and dignified work. Among the speakers, Athena Peralta, director of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission on Climate Justice and Sustainable Development, highlighted a critical upcoming milestone: COP30 and its focus on just transition.

Courage to work together

Courage is what is needed from us at this point in time. This is one of the thoughts that stuck with me from the 2025 Working Together meeting of WCC. It was my second time attending and once again an enriching space of not only sharing information but building relationships, joint learning, and encouragement.

Une rencontre historique sur les dimensions spirituelles de la crise écologique a rassemblé les responsables chrétien-ne-s de traditions orientales et occidentales à Assise, en Italie, pour concevoir une Fête de la création liturgique commune. La conférence s’est déroulée sur trois jours du 5 au 7 mai et a constitué une étape importante vers ce que l’évêque Heinrich Bedford-Strohm qualifie de «merveilleuse expression de l’essence trinitaire qui nous unit en tant qu’Églises» et de réponse spirituelle forte aux enjeux climatiques urgents qui assaillent le monde.

In einer wegweisenden Versammlung mit Fokus auf die spirituellen Aspekte der Umweltkrise trafen sich christliche Führungspersonen aus östlichen und westlichen Tradition in Assisi, Italien, um ein gemeinsames liturgisches Fest der Schöpfung in die Wege zu leiten. Die dreitägige Konferenz vom 5. bis 7. Mai ist ein wichtiger Schritt in Richtung eines in den Worten von Bischof Prof. Dr. Heinrich Bedford-Strohm „wundervollen Ausdrucks der trinitarischen Kerns, der uns als Kirchen eint“, und eine kraftvolle spirituelle Reaktion auf die akuten klimatischen Herausforderungen unseres Planeten.

En un encuentro sin precedentes para abordar las dimensiones espirituales de la crisis ecológica, líderes cristianos de las tradiciones oriental y occidental se reunieron en Asís (Italia) para desarrollar una Fiesta litúrgica de la Creación compartida. La conferencia de tres días, del 5 al 7 de mayo, supone un paso significativo hacia el establecimiento de lo que el obispo Prof. Dr. Heinrich Bedford-Strohm describió como “una maravillosa expresión de la esencia trinitaria que nos une como iglesias” y una poderosa respuesta espiritual a los acuciantes desafíos climáticos a los que se enfrenta nuestro planeta.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) Commission on Climate Justice and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Faiths for Biodiversity coalition and the ecumenical Season of Creation team, invites you to a critical webinar addressing the unprecedented ecological crisis. With species extinction rates up to 1,000 times higher than natural levels and approximately one million animal and plant species threatened, this event will explore the moral and spiritual dimensions of biodiversity loss and present pathways for faith communities to take meaningful action through prayer and transformative repentance.

At Kirchentag, WCC shares journey and commitment to economic and ecological justice

During a panel discussion held during Kirchentag in Hannover, Germany, Rev. Dr Kenneth Mtata, World Council of Churches (WCC) programme director for Life, Justice, and Peace, shared  the WCCs journey and commitment to economic and ecological justice—from its early prophetic foundations to the forthcoming launch of the Ecumenical Decade for Climate Action (2025–2035).

Christian leaders unite in Assisi to establish historic Feast of Creation

In a landmark gathering addressing the spiritual dimensions of the ecological crisis, Christian leaders from Eastern and Western traditions convened in Assisi, Italy, to develop a shared liturgical Feast of Creation. The three-day conference from 5-7 May marks a significant step toward establishing what Bishop Prof. Dr Heinrich Bedford-Strohm described as "a wonderful expression of the trinitarian essence that unites us as churches" and a powerful spiritual response to the urgent climate challenges facing our planet.

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay commemorated the 160th anniversary of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan with special greetings reflecting on the anniversary theme Dwelling in God`s Abundance.”  On 23 April 2025, Pillay preached during a service commemorating the anniversary.

The church as the healing community

In January 2025, I spent time with churches in Bolivia making an appeal for the church to become a healing community. For countries like Bolivia, with several health problems and lack of access to basic healthcare needs, the divine calling and pastoral care mandate for health and healing is unavoidable.
