World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, following South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed attempt on 3 December to impose martial law, expressed solidarity and support for the Korean churches, and all ecumenical and civil society partners working to defend human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in this time of crisis.

In a statement released 4 December, the National Council of Churches in Korea condemned the sudden declaration of martial law by president Yoon Suk Yeol, and committed to restoring democracy in the nation. 

During a visit to Canada, World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay shared an address on 5 December in Toronto commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Canadian Council of Churches.

Prayer will be at the centre of the Sixth World Conference on Faith and Order when it gathers in October 2025 near Alexandria, Egypt, on the theme “Where now for visible unity?”
