“Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 (NRSV)

Dear brothers and sisters of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan,

Greetings, peace and blessings to you during this difficult time in Taiwan. It is with deep sadness that we received the news of the powerful earthquake that struck just off the coast of Hualien on 3 April.

On behalf of the World Council of Churches and its member churches worldwide, I am writing to express our deepest solidarity and heartfelt condolences to the people of Taiwan.

Our prayers are with you and all those who lost loved ones in their families and among friends in this terrible earthquake and its aftershocks. Our thoughts and petitions are also with all those are involved in the rescue work.

It also pains me to learn about the damages caused by the earthquake to the Yushan Theological Seminary.

Our prayer and hope is that churches and specialized agencies in the ecumenical family be able to extend every possible support for humanitarian aid assistance in affected areas. Please let me know how we may be of assistance to you during this difficult time.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay
General Secretary
