“My dear fellow disciples of Jesus, as you gather for your annual assembly, let me greet you all and salute you in your ongoing quest for faithful witness to the gospel in this especially challenging time,” he wrote. “Our whole global ecumenical fellowship joins in my greeting.”

Pillay noted that the World Council of Churches feel a special kinship with the Presbyterian Church in Republic of Korea.

“We are particularly proud of your enduring and consistent witness to social justice, to the sustainability of the earth, to the vocations of women, to peace and justice for the people of Korea, to strong ecumenical theological education,” he wrote. “As we praise your witness, so also, we pledge our continuing solidarity and partnership with you and all who seek justice, peace, and reconciliation in Korea and for its people.”

Pillay added that we cannot afford to acquiesce in injustice and mounting hostilities. “They render us alert to every redemptive possibility emerging in our lives, our communities, our churches, and our world,” wrote Pillay. “The God who creates and sustains us, heals and redeems us, enlightens and empowers us, is ever at work in the world and in us to renew our faith and enable us to offer ourselves in the cause of peace, justice, and reconciliation.”

Our faith enables us to offer hope to the world, Pillay reflected. "Working and walking and praying together, we continue our Pilgrimage of Justice, Reconciliation, and Unity for the sake of the world,” he wrote. “May God, through the presence of the Holy Spirit bless your meeting, guide your deliberations and decisions and strengthen your witness in Korea and beyond.”
