Nalwamba’s lecture, entitled “From Memory to Healing: Engaging Justice, Reconciliation, and Unity in a Wounded World,” was the May McLeod Lecture on 30 July at the college.
The lecture offered a theological framework for engaging the interrelated challenges of memory, justice, reconciliation, and unity in a world marked by collective trauma, structural violence, and ecclesial division.
She also met with the National Council of Churches in Australia, as well as the Uniting Church of Australia leadership.
During a “Bearing Witness” tour, hosted by the Parramatta Community Uniting Church, Nalwamba learned about how Palestinian Christians in Australia are assisting refugee families.
She also preached a sermon, entitled “A Heart for the City – A Global Witness,” on 2 August at the Carlingford-West Epping Uniting Church of Australia.
"My time in Australia has been a profound reminder that the unity we seek as churches is not an abstract ideal but a living reality, built through shared worship, honest dialogue, and a common commitment to bearing witness to God's love in a wounded world,” said Nalwamba. “From the lecture hall to the congregation and roundtable conversations with candidates for ministry, I have been deeply enriched by the warmth, wisdom, and faithful witness of the Australian church. I will carry these connections and prayers with me, ever more convinced that our ecumenical journey is sustained by relationships that cross every border.”
Rev. Dr Seforosa Caroll, acting principle of United Theological College, expressed appreciation for the time Nalwamba spent with faculty and students.
“Nalwamba’s presence brought home and strengthened the connection of global ecumenism with United Theological College and ecumenical leaders at both the state and national level including our Uniting Church,” said Caroll. “Her lecture on reconciliation was not only inspiring but also helped us to think more deeply on our continuing action on the journey of justice, reconciliation, and healing with Australia’s First Peoples. I look forward to continuing collaboration with WCC on ecumenical formation and mission.”
