One of the themes that overarched all meetings was the question of financing health care in the face of multiple crises.
In preparation, the WCC commission had prepared a background analysis and called partners for listening sessions as a tool to gather authentic voices and collect data on access to healthcare. This enabled partners to share burdens and come up with suggestions and strategies to overcome the present crises.
Some issues specifically highlighted included: funding cuts that decimated programs in HIV, tuberculosis, or malaria to stop with serious effects on the health of communities; increased vulnerability of women and children and marginalised communities; wars and violence; and many more.
The two listening sessions featured faith-based healthcare providers sharing how the present public health crisis has affected their work. Participants developed strategies to overcome the crisis through advocacy work, and through encouraging local engagement for Christian healthcare.
Following the sessions, the WCC commission is exploring creating a sharing platform for partners to communicate burdens and successes; mobilising churches to get involved in a holistic healing ministry that especially addresses the needs of most vulnerable populations; creating awareness on the effect of climate change; and many more solutions.
