Hosted by the National Council of Churches in Bangladesh (NCCB), Pillay will meet with government officials, and participate in a programme on climate change, and the nexus of land, water, and food. Organized by the NCCB, on 10 April, Pillay will address a large interfaith gathering in Dhaka. On Palm Sunday, 13 April, he will preach at the Bangladesh Baptist Church at Farmgate.
This is Pillay’s first visit as WCC general secretary to Bangladesh, where two WCC member churches are present: the Bangladesh Baptist Church Sangha and the Church of Bangladesh. The WCC has a long ecumenical relationship with churches and partners in Bangladesh.
The WCC general secretary will also visit the Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB) where a one-day seminar on climate justice will be held at the CCDB Climate Park. Founded with the direct support of the WCC in 1973, CCDB has been an active member of the WCC, ACT Alliance, and other key ecumenical bodies.
Pillay will also visit the leadership of the Catholic Church in Bangladesh, including Vatican Ambassador Nuncio, Archbishop Kevin Stuart Randall, Cardinal Patrick D'Rozario and Archbishop Bejoy Nicephorus D'Cruze.
The WCC general secretary will be accompanied by Dinesh Suna, WCC programme executive, for Land, Water, and Food. Frederique Seidel, WCC senior programme lead for Children and Climate, will join the conference online.
