“It is my special delight and honour to welcome you today to this gathering of the full WCC Commission on World Mission and Evangelism,” he said. “It is exciting that you are here, representing the rich array of Christian churches, confessions, and regions around the world.”
He commended the commission for being a vital link in the ecumenical movement to its source in grassroots Christianity.
“You will bring to the fore the experience and issues that will form and inform the future theology and practice of ecumenical mission and evangelism. And, importantly, united by prayer and fellowship, you will here attempt to discern the workings and will of the Spirit in the world today,” he said. "You are shapers of the next phase of Christian mission.”
The commission is meeting under the theme “Preparing the Way: Mission as Counter Creating,” and is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the WCC Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network.
“The church is commissioned to celebrate life, and to resist and transform all life-destroying forces, in the power of the Holy Spirit,” PIllay concluded. ‘May the Spirit break over you in your work as you seek ways by which the ecumenical movement can change the world through deeds of justice, reconciliation, and unity.”
