“Your Eminence has been both an animator and a coordinator of the bulk of the WCC official contacts with the Roman Catholic Church and of so many joint activities,” noted Pillay. "You and your colleagues have performed this role faithfully and creatively over many years, so that the WCC has found in you a trusted partner on the ecumenical journey.”
Pillay also reflected that the World Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Church will continue a faithful collaboration—with much more work to be done ahead.
“On our ecumenical path, your deep theological reflections on the foundations, the vision, the ways, and the practice of the ecumenical movement, and especially the insistence on spiritual ecumenism, continue to animate, inspire, and guide us all,” wrote Pillay. “At this hour of thanksgiving, we celebrate with you the gifts that God has entrusted you and that you made so fruitful throughout your many years of service in his vineyard.”
