We are certain that your ecumenical commitments will continue to animate and inspire your work in this important post,” the letter reads. “Of course, your appointment speaks well of all the gifts and skills and convictions that you bring to this new post.”

But it also attests to the promise of renewal and further flourishing of the Kirchentag for the future, the letter notes.

“Kirchentag has been for generations a wonderful annual celebration of the gifts of Christian faith, the joys of Christian fellowship, and the great potential for Christian engagement in the public sphere and in the larger cultural life of Germany,” write Bedford-Strohm and Pillay. “Over the years the Kirchentag has provided wonderful liturgies and communal prayer and entertainment.”

But the Kirchentag is also an open forum for dialogue, the WCC leaders reflected. “It is a meeting place for deep reflection about today’s most important issues and engendering commitment by Christians to advance the reign of God in public life,” the letter reads. “It plays a significant role in the transmission of Christian values into the public arena.”

Kirchentag has always evolved with the times, the letter concludes. “In this endeavour, we pledge our heartfelt prayers, our enduring support, and our glad cooperation.”
