What inspired you to study at the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, and what were you hoping to gain from the experience?
Rev. Hyde Riley: I didn’t know much about Bossey at the time, but I knew it was an ecumenical institution which would provide an opportunity for shared learning, dialogue, and exchange of ideas through different contextual lenses. Very importantly, I was going to be utilizing a period of sabbatical provided for by my church and wanted an experience that would also allow for personal renewal and rejuvenation. I took on the challenge to pursue the Complementary Certificate in Ecumenical Studies which would guarantee full engagement in the programme instead of just being an observer. Looking back, I have concluded that I could not have chosen a better place. The environment of Bossey was ideal for all that I had in mind and more.
In retrospect I believe the Lord used the experience to prepare me for further ecumenical service because shortly after I returned to Jamaica, I was elected by the Jamaica Council of Churches to be its president and years later became a vice moderator of the WCC central committee. The formation at Bossey has proved to be tremendously useful in these roles.
Looking back, what is one experience or lesson from Bossey that has had the greatest impact on your personal, academic, or ministry journey?
Rev. Hyde Riley: Though I had previously studied at an ecumenical institution, Bossey provided more exposure to an understanding of and appreciation for different communions. As a result, I have developed tremendous respect for some communions in a way that may not have happened without Bossey and I left the institution affirming, that we are already one in Christ and it is quite possible to increasingly make that visible, by our consistent dialogue and strengthening of relationships towards greater convergence.
What would you say to someone who is considering studying at the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey?
Rev. Hyde Riley: I would strongly encourage anyone thinking about studying at Bossey to do so. I believe it is an experience like no other and the actual physical location and living arrangements at Bossey adds to the experience in a significant way. The Bossey experience is a gift and opportunity to be embraced and celebrated.
