Titled “Investing in Women’s Lives: Ending Femicide,” the webinar will address the root causes of why an average of 133 women and girls are killed every day by an intimate partner or family member, according to UN Women.
Like all forms of sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls, femicide is a tragedy that affects every country and territory across the globe.
UN Women reports that, in 2022, Africa recorded the largest absolute number of female intimate partner and family-related killings with an estimated 20,000 victims, followed by 18,400 in Asia; 7,900 in the Americas; 2,300 in Europe; and 200 in Oceania. This indicates that the world is failing to stop deaths that could be prevented through early intervention, gender-responsive policing and justice, and access to survivor-centred support and protection.
Speakers, via a panel discussion, will suggest ways to invest in women’s safety and empowerment to disrupt the cycle of violence, save lives, and contribute to gender equality and sustainable development.
The webinar is being cohosted by the World Council of Churches, All Africa Conference of Churches, Christian Aid, Church Women United, and Fellowship of the Least Coin.
