During their visit to Geneva, Chung and Sakupapa met with the WCC general secretary and members of the WCC staff. They were also welcomed at the WCC’s Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, which will host a meeting of the EEF Commission in October. The gathering will include a special commemoration marking the 80th anniversary of the WCC’s Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, highlighting its enduring contribution to ecumenical formation and dialogue.
"We want to look back and to look forward with vision and commitment. Ecumenism is to promote mutual listening and cooperation, and formation is to perform our learning and practice in every context as Christians,” said Chung, who is from the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea.
“We want to respond to contemporary global challenges in our commission. And I am really thankful to be able to meet with the WCC general secretary and staff in Geneva during these days. I am very much revitalized and returning to Korea to prepare the commemoration of the 40 years of the Glion Consultation,” she added.
In the historic 1986 Consultation in Glion, Switzerland, the WCC convened the first historic face-to-face dialogue and inter-Korean Eucharist between North and South Korean Christians.
Chung and Sakupapa also engaged in planning for a special edition of the WCC journal The Ecumenical Review in 2027 focusing on ecumenical formation.
"During its two-day leadership and staff meeting, we reflected on ecumenical formation as ethos and programme," said Sakupapa, from the Uniting Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa. “The meeting explored avenues to nurture and deepen this focus, building on the legacy of WCC work in ecumenical theological education and formation while reimagining ecumenical formation as an ecology of mutual learning, spiritual formation, theological hospitality, and shared witness," he added.
