“Close to 500 bishops, 60 abbots, and more than a thousand prelates attended,” reads the statement, which goes on to describe the political inference at the council. “We recognise that the theological dialogue between our two churches can only be successful if conducted in complete freedom and without direct or indirect pressure from political institutions.”
The statement expresses the hope that churches will continue to commit to serious and honest dialogue, at both local and international levels, on the doctrinal points still preventing a return to unity.
