Just over a year since Azerbaijan ethnically cleansed the Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh, at least 23 ethnic Armenians – possibly as many as 100 – remain in detention by the government of Azerbaijan, in defiance of international calls for their release.
The event—featuring human rights lawyers, activists, and legal experts—will highlight the case of these detainees.
Armenian detainees in Azerbaijan have been denied their legal rights under international human rights law, and the abuse and mistreatment of Armenian prisoners in Azerbaijani detention is well-documented.
In May, the UN Committee Against Torture expressed its “alarm” at Azerbaijan’s “alleged extra-judicial killings, torture, and ill-treatment of national and ethnic Armenians during armed conflict” and “concerns over the continued detention of 23 individuals of Armenian ethnic or national origin.”
As COP29 in Baku approaches, a growing international movement is calling for freedom for these detainees. This event will explore the fate of these detainees, Azerbaijan’s responsibilities to them and their families under international law, and pathways to justice in the aftermath of the forced displacement of Nagorno Karabakh’s entire Armenian population.
The event will be live-streamed.
