An ecumenical service at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church on 21 January was titled “Light from Light for Light,” inspired by the attribute of Christ adopted by the Nicene-Constantinopolitan creed, a touchstone for Christians.
This service was adapted from the Sunrise Service, one of the daily prayer-hours of the Armenian Church, compiled by the great Catholicos St Nersess “the Gracious” of Gla (†1173).
“What does it mean to be united with people who are different from you?” asked Very Rev. Fr Goossan Aljanian of the St-Hagop Armenian Parish in Geneva during the reflection.
“No matter how many differences you and another Christian have, you are united by something that goes far beyond a personality or interests. You've both been changed by the truth of the Gospel, and have been adopted into the same spiritual family.”
“The Bible emphasize humility repeatedly. Why is it so important to be humble?” reflected Aljanian. “For one, when we're mindful of our own weaknesses; we're less likely to act self-righteous and judgmental, and more likely to be gracious toward our brothers and sisters in Christ who have weaknesses of their own.”
When we're united with other believers, we can learn more, grow more, and enjoy the type of community for which God designed us, concluded Aljanian.
Organized by the Fellowship of Christian Churches in Geneva (Rassemblement des Eglises et Communautés Chrétiennes de Genève), another ecumenical prayer service this week took place at the Malagnou Protestant Church in Geneva.
The resources for the 2026 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity were prepared by the Armenian Apostolic (Orthodox) Church, along with their brothers and sisters of the Armenian Catholic and Evangelical churches.
