In describing Albrecht’s work, Global South World wrote: “On TikTok, Albrecht shares thoughtful content that combines political analysis, historical insight, and faith-informed perspectives. His videos often tackle themes like social justice, authoritarianism, and global affairs, offering a values-based take on current events.”
Albrecht, an ordained pastor of the Evangelical Church of the River Plate, also served as a communicator for the World Council of Churches (WCC) 11th Assembly in Karlsruhe, Germany in 2022.
He took time to share his memories of the assembly, how he views his work, and why social media is such a valuable tool.
What are your fondest memories serving as a WCC assembly communicator?
Albrecht: I consider myself privileged to have been part of the communications team at the WCC assembly. Personally, I learned a lot from the excellent teamwork that developed, especially in the video team, where I was able to work with a great deal of freedom and respect alongside colleagues from different parts of the world. The assembly was a space for deep communion, and I had never experienced anything of that magnitude before, with so many people from different places, but united by the same spirit.
As you combine a faith perspective with your life as a journalist, are there times when there is tension between these two approaches?
Albrecht: I consider myself a Christian who embraces his commitment to faith in the pursuit of a more just world, closer to what Jesus calls the Kingdom of God. I thank God for having been able to train in journalism and, today, to be a content creator with a significant impact on social media. The call remains the same as always: to proclaim the year of the Lord's grace to the needy and to announce the end of suffering to the oppressed. My cause has been and continues to be the following of Jesus Christ.
Speaking about social and political realities from a Christian and Protestant perspective is no easy task, especially since many Christians who consume this type of content believe that these issues should not be addressed from a faith perspective. Although I see no contradiction in this, I often receive messages with these kinds of questions, and even threats and insults, which curiously come from people who define themselves as pious and obedient to the Word of God.
Why do you find short video platforms so effective?
Albrecht: I believe that short video platforms, such as TikTok and IG Reels, among others, offer an enormous opportunity to bear witness to our faith and share a prophetic message in a world that needs—and must—hear our voices. It is a very powerful tool that allows our voice to transcend limits we cannot imagine. It is a space where each and every one of us can make our voice heard.
I really like to use an update of Jesus' words and say, “Take your social nets and follow me” (in Spanish: toma tus redes sociales y sígueme). That's why I would say that we have the opportunity to be witnesses of God's love, and to do so we must learn, train ourselves, let go of fear, turn on our cell phone cameras, and start creating content, because our voice must be heard.
