Pre-COP30 ecumenical faith leaders press conference
COP30 will take place in Belém in the Brazilian Amazon from 10–21 November, with the Heads of State Summit on 6–7 November. The conference will address pressing questions: how to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, how to provide climate finance that supports climate action in developing countries and prioritizes local communities, and the urgent need for a just transition away from fossil fuels. With COP30 approaching, journalists can hear directly from faith leaders on the frontlines of the climate crisis about the impact on their communities, how churches are mobilizing, and their calls for action.
Archbishop Marinez Bassotto, Anglican archbishop of Belém, Brazil, will speak at the press conference. Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Catholic archbishop of the Democratic Republic of Congo (to be confirmed); Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, moderator of the central committee of the World Council of Churches; and Jocabed Solano, Indigenous leader from the Guandule Nation in Panama will also participate. Simon Chambers from ACT Alliance will moderate.
Speakers will share stories of community-led responses to climate change and explain how they are raising their voices to influence decision-makers. Churches in Brazil have actively mobilized to ensure that local communities' realities are placed at the forefront of discussions, both inside and outside the COP negotiations. This COP will see a significant presence of Christian groups.
Journalists and interested participants can register for the press conference with the registration link below. The format includes brief presentations by speakers and time for questions. Journalists will have direct access to faith leaders who will be present at COP30.
