1st International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels

The World Council of Churches (WCC) joins an international coalition of faith communities, governments, and civil society at the 1st International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, Colombia, from 24-29 April 2026.

WCC delegates will travel to Santa Marta carrying a Multi-faith Call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty, co-prepared with partner faith actors, urging governments to advance the fossil fuel transition: ending new fossil fuel development immediately and guaranteeing a just, equitable phase-out of coal, oil, and gas. The conference begins online: a webinar, "Faiths for a Fossil Fuel Free Future," is offered on 15 April 2026 in two sessions. Session 1 at 10:00–11:00 CEST, and session 2 at 15:00–16:00 Colombia time.

For the WCC and its member churches, this conference marks a defining commitment within the Ecumenical Decade of Climate Justice Action, which calls churches to move from fossil fuels toward renewable, community-owned energy systems and to advocate for a just transition grounded in equity. This commitment now finds a concrete arena.

Co-organised by the governments of Colombia and the Netherlands, the conference responds to the Belém Declaration on the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels, supported by 24 countries, and to the failure of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, to include a direct reference to fossil fuels in its final text. The conference also follows the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice, which confirmed that states have a legal obligation to manage fossil fuel production.

Central to the agenda: a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, debt relief for lower-income countries, alternative economic models, and protection for Indigenous Peoples, Peoples of African Descent, peasants, and workers through the transition.

The Multi-faith Call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty calls on governments to end new fossil fuel development immediately, phase out existing production rapidly and equitably, and guarantee universal access to clean, affordable renewable energy for all people.

Register now for "Faiths for a Fossil Fuel Free Future,” a webinar offered on 15 April 2026 in two sessions: session 1 at 10:00 CEST and session 2 at 15:00 Colombia time.
