H.E. Metropolitan Dr Vasilios of Constantia - Ammochostos

6 September 2022, Karlsruhe, Germany: H.E. Metropolitan Dr Vasilios of Constantia - Ammochostos (Eastern Orthodox), newly elected WCC president at the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches is held in Karlsruhe, Germany from 31 August to 8 September, under the theme "Christ's Love Moves the World to Reconciliation and Unity."
H.E. Metropolitan Dr VASILIOS OF CONSTANTIA - AMMOCHOSTOS, Church of Cyprus
Metr. Vasilios is native to the district of Ammochostos on the island of Cyprus. After he finished his basic education, Metropolitan Vasilios joined the brotherhood of the Monastery of the Apostle Barnabas and was tonsured a monk with the name Vasilios. He lived at the monastery until the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
His Eminence Metropolitan Vasilios began his theological education at the Seminary of the Apostle Barnabas from which he graduated. He continued his studies at the A'Gymnasium for Males in Ammochostos, and then undertook theological studies at the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens. Following his graduation, he began his post-graduate studies at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, including theological studies at the Theological Faculty.
While pursuing his education, Vasilios entered the Holy Orders when he was ordained a deacon at the Apostle Barnabas Monastery and a priest in Cyprus, raised to the dignity of archimandrite, and then was elected Bishop of Trimithounta by the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus. Bishop Vasilios was elected Bishop of Constantia and Ammochostos and enthroned at the temporary residence of the bishopric in Paralimni.
He has been the representative of the Church of Cyprus in the theological dialogues between Orthodox and Roman-Catholic Churches and between Orthodox and Anglican Churches. He has served on many WCC Governing Bodies and Commissions - in the Central committee, Executive and Finance Committees and as member and Moderator of the Faith and Order Commission.
